Tooth Extraction at Bright Now! Dental

Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?

During your dental examination, we’ll utilize X-rays to assess the extent of damage or infection, helping us determine whether a tooth removal is necessary. Whether it’s wisdom teeth, damaged teeth, a crowded gumline, tooth decay, or infection, there are common situations where a tooth extraction may be recommended.

We always strive to safeguard, mend, and maintain your natural teeth whenever possible. Unfortunately, issues like tooth decay or traumatic injuries can impact the feasibility of restoring the tooth.

At Bright Now! Portland, we ensure affordable tooth extractions become a reality. Instead of enduring the pain of a tooth infection, we make accessing proper care hassle-free.

Secure your appointment for a consultation at Bright Now! Dental in Portland, where you’ll receive a tailored treatment plan. Don’t delay in reclaiming and perfecting your radiant smile!

I've gone to Bright Now for years, and for the past few, I've had Beverly as my hygienist for my regular checkups and cleanings. She's very personable and professional, takes good care of me, and I'll be back in 6 months for my next checkup.

I had a great experience all around at this office. I was able to get an appointment quickly, was told what my coverage was, what I could expect to pay out of pocket and how long the procedure would take. Dr. Sarrame was excellent...5 stars are not enough.

I'm so happy I tried this dental office! It's such a gamble, wondering if you will choose a good place from the list that your insurance company gives you. I was impressed with everyone from the Receptionist, to X-ray tech, to Hygienist, to Dentist. All of them were friendly, knowledgeable, respectful, efficient, and good at their individual jobs. As someone with TMJ, women with small hands are a major bonus for me. So far I only had an exam, x-rays and cap replaced, but I was very impressed.

Post-Extraction DOs

Rest: Immediately after the extraction, it’s important to take it easy. Rest for at least 24 hours to allow your body to begin the healing process.

Bite on Gauze: Your dentist will provide you with sterile gauze pads. Bite gently on these pads over the extraction site to help control bleeding. Change them as needed, following your dentist’s instructions.

Apply Ice: To minimize swelling and discomfort, apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to your cheek for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off during the first 24 hours.

Maintain Oral Hygiene: While you should avoid the extraction site when brushing and flossing, continue to clean your other teeth and gums gently. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and rinse your mouth with warm saltwater (if advised by your dentist) to keep the area clean.

Eat a Soft Diet: Stick to a soft diet for a few days. Opt for foods like yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and soups. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or hard foods that could irritate the extraction site.

Follow-Up Appointments: Attend any follow-up appointments scheduled by your dentist to monitor your healing progress. They will remove any stitches if necessary and assess your recovery.

Be Patient with Healing: Remember that the full healing process may take several weeks. Be patient, and follow your dentist’s instructions diligently to ensure a successful and comfortable recovery.

Post-Extraction DON’Ts

No Smoking: Smoking can impede the healing process and increase the risk of complications. Avoid tobacco products for at least 72 hours after extraction, if not longer.

Avoid Straws: Sipping through straws creates suction in your mouth, which can dislodge the blood clot that forms in the extraction site. Skip the straws for the first few days.

Don’t Rinse Vigorously: Refrain from rinsing your mouth vigorously for the initial 24 hours. Gently rinse with warm saltwater if instructed by your dentist.

Don’t Touch the Site: Avoid touching or probing the extraction site with your fingers or tongue. Keep your hands and foreign objects away from the area to prevent infection.

Don’t Skip Medications: If your dentist has prescribed pain medication or antibiotics, take them as directed. Skipping doses can lead to increased discomfort or complications.

Skip Alcohol and Mouthwash: Avoid alcoholic beverages and mouthwash with high alcohol content, as they can delay healing and cause discomfort.

Resist the Urge to Spit Excessively: Excessive spitting can disrupt the blood clot formation, which is crucial for healing. Swallow saliva gently.

Don’t Ignore Complications: If you experience severe pain, prolonged bleeding, fever, or any signs of infection, do not ignore them. Contact your dentist promptly for guidance.

Stay Away from Hot Beverages: Hot drinks can increase blood flow to the extraction site and may lead to prolonged bleeding. Stick to cool or lukewarm beverages.

Avoid Chewing on the Extraction Side: Do not use the side of your mouth where the extraction occurred for chewing until your dentist gives the green light.
